Mississippi Summit on Courts and the Military is set for Feb. 24 February 8, 2017 The Mississippi Summit on Courts and the Military is scheduled for Feb. 24 at Mississippi College School of Law, 151 East Griffith Street in Jackson. The program is expected to educate family court judges about combat veterans’ struggles with readjustment to civilian life. The program is intended to improve assessment of child custody cases involving combat veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD. Former MCSOL Dean Jim Rosenblatt will give the invocation to open the program at 8:30 a.m. Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. will welcome program participants at 8:45 a.m. Attorney General Jim Hood will honor veterans with remarks at 9 a.m. MCSOL Director of Legal Writing Evan Seamone will give the first presentation at 9:15 a.m., discussing courts’ vital role in post-combat readjustment. Richard Meyer, director of the L.L.M. program at MCSOL, will continue the discussion with a presentation titled “Outlaw Heroes in the Wake of a Legalized Battlefield.” Camp Shelby’s suicide prevention program manager, Staff Sergeant Jean M. Whaley, will discuss suicide prevention for the military at 10:30 a.m. Sessions addressing intimate partner violence will begin at 12:30 p.m. Second Lieutenant Gloria N. McCaskill, sexual assault response coordinator of Joint Force Headquarters, will begin the discussion with insights into military personnel and veterans. Lt. Col. Deidre Smith, director of Outreach Services of Joint Force Headquarters, also will speak. Veterans Justice Outreach Specialists David Germany and Ronda Aldridge of the Veterans Administration are scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. The program will conclude at 4:30 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Mississippi Supreme Court Administrative Office of Courts,Mississippi College School of Law, the Mississippi Office of the Attorney General, the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, the Mississippi Army National Guard and the Fondren Institute. Registration is open to persons seeking continuing education credits. The program is approved for six hours of continuing legal education credit.
